WHAT’S THAT

This week’s visual clue.

Goldman Sachs: Opening the Door to Alternatives

Goldman Sachs surveyed 1,000 HNW and UHNW investors in the US to map private market participation. Alternative adoption scales sharply with wealth: just 39% of households with $1-5M in investable assets use alternatives, versus 80% of those with over $10M. The knowledge gap is equally telling, only 41% of advised clients have ever had a conversation with their advisor about private markets, while ETFs and tax strategies dominate the agenda.

The generational shift may be the most consequential signal. Millennials allocate roughly 20% of their assets to alternatives, compared to 11% for Gen X and just 6% for Boomers, and they view public equities as the riskier bet. As this cohort inherits and accumulates wealth, the report suggests alternatives are on track to move from a UHNW privilege to a standard building block of HNW portfolio construction.
